Call for Papers for Special Issue of Community Development: Journal of the Community Development Society

Community Theory: Current Perspectives and Future Directions

Community Development: Journal of the Community Development Society invites submission for a special issue, “ Community Theory: Current Perspectives and Future Directions,” edited by M.A. Brennan and Ralph B. Brown.

What is the current state of community theory? Many have expressed concern that community studies are at a crossroads, where a previously strong theoretical base appears to be in decline. Such concerns are present as we are experiencing some of the most monumental changes since the turn of the 19 th century (dramatic advances in communications technology, global economic shifts, and the internet are just a few examples). Just as turn-of-the 20 th century shifts defined the theoretical foundations of community studies for the past century, in the new millennium we are confronted with new puzzles and issues that demand innovative concepts and visions of community. To this end, we seek to discover the beginnings of new theoretical foundations for the study of community, as well as to explore advances to existing theoretical perspectives. We feel it is time to open a debate among community scholars and practitioners regarding the current and future state of community theory.

As guest editors, we seek manuscripts that focus on the advancement of community theory. Specifically, we seek manuscripts that explore the current status of community theory, present methods for bridging potential theoretical divides, and suggest methods for furthering the development of a new theoretical foundation in contemporary community studies. Manuscripts must adhere to JCDS format requirements (http://comm-dev.org ) and be submitted via email to M.A. Brennan  (brennanm@ufl.edu) or Ralph B. Brown (ralph_brown@byu.edu) no later than August 31, 2007.
